At VISTA, our mission is to create a sustainable solution to poverty. There is no better opportunity to create sustainable solutions to poverty than helping restore low income housing units so the families who reside there can return to their homes as soon as possible. We have teamed up with The Housing Fellowship because their missions are so complimentary.
In the early 1990's--before The Housing Fellowship had a full-time paid staff--VISTAs were used to staff their Johnson County office, and their current office manager is a former VISTA. "VISTAs have a significant and long history in Iowa City," said Maryann Dennis, executive director of The Housing Fellowship.
AmeriCorps VISTAs are working to create sustainable positions in our community so our mission to combat poverty continues long after current volunteers have completed their programs.
